DIN 931 Hex Head Bolt (Partial Thread) | ISO 4014 Technical Datasheet

DIN 931 Hex Head Bolts, now superseded by ISO 4014, are partially threaded hexagon head bolts widely used in machinery, structural steelwork, fabrication, industrial equipment, automotive assemblies, construction, and heavy engineering applications. The unthreaded shank improves alignment and provides greater resistance to shear forces, making DIN 931 bolts ideal for joints subjected to transverse loading.

Horizon Inc. supplies DIN 931 / ISO 4014 hex bolts in a wide range of metric sizes, property classes, materials, and protective finishes to meet the requirements of industrial and engineering fastening applications.

Dimensions Tolerances:
General dimensional tolerances for standard metric fasteners—including thread diameter, overall length, head diameter, head height/thickness, across flats, and washer dimensions—are available in our Standard Dimensional Tolerances for Common Metric Fasteners guide.

Certain product-specific features, such as drive recess dimensions, socket depth, countersink geometry, under-head radii, and other special characteristics, are governed by the applicable DIN or ISO product standard and may not included in this datasheet.

  • Easy installation using standard spanners and sockets.
  • Widely used across industrial and structural applications.

What is the difference between DIN 931 and DIN 933?

DIN 931 bolts are partially threaded, while DIN 933 bolts are fully threaded. Partial thread bolts provide better shear strength and alignment, whereas full thread bolts offer maximum thread engagement.

Is DIN 931 the same as ISO 4014?

Yes. DIN 931 has largely been replaced by ISO 4014, and the two standards are interchangeable for most industrial applications, subject to dimensional verification.

Why are partial thread bolts preferred in structural applications?

The unthreaded shank has a larger cross-sectional area than the threaded portion, making it better suited to resist shear forces and reducing stress concentrations in the joint.

What property class should I choose?

Property Class 8.8 is suitable for most industrial applications. Classes 10.9 and 12.9 are used where higher strength is required, while stainless steel grades are preferred in corrosive environments.

Can DIN 931 bolts be used with standard hex nuts?

Yes. DIN 931 bolts are compatible with standard metric hex nuts such as DIN 934 / ISO 4032, provided the thread size and pitch match.

Are DIN 931 bolts available in stainless steel?

Yes. They are commonly available in Stainless Steel A2 (304) and A4 (316), offering excellent corrosion resistance for outdoor, marine, and chemical environments.

How is the length of a DIN 931 bolt measured?

Bolt length is measured from the underside of the hex head to the end of the threaded shank.

What surface finishes are available?

Common finishes include zinc plating, yellow zinc passivation, hot-dip galvanizing, black oxide, Geomet®, Dacromet®, and self-colour finishes, depending on the material and application.

What industries commonly use DIN 931 hex bolts?

DIN 931 hex bolts are widely used in construction, manufacturing, automotive, electrical equipment, renewable energy, agriculture, heavy engineering, and industrial machinery.

What is the advantage of a partially threaded bolt?

The smooth shank improves component alignment, reduces wear between assembled parts, and provides higher resistance to shear loads compared to a fully threaded bolt of the same diameter.
