DIN 85 Slotted Pan Head Machine Screw Technical Datasheet

DIN 85 Slotted Pan Head Machine Screws are metric threaded fasteners featuring a low rounded pan head with a traditional straight (slotted) drive. Designed for fastening metal components, machinery, electrical equipment, and general engineering assemblies, these screws are widely used where standard flat-blade installation is preferred.

Manufactured according to DIN 85, these screws are available in carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, aluminium, and titanium with multiple protective finishes to suit various industrial and environmental conditions. Although Phillips and Pozidriv drives have become more common in modern assembly, DIN 85 slotted screws remain popular in restoration work, electrical applications, architectural hardware, and maintenance operations.

Dimensions Tolerances:
General dimensional tolerances for standard metric fasteners—including thread diameter, overall length, head diameter, head height/thickness, across flats, and washer dimensions—are available in our Standard Dimensional Tolerances for Common Metric Fasteners guide.

Certain product-specific features, such as drive recess dimensions, socket depth, countersink geometry, under-head radii, and other special characteristics, are governed by the applicable DIN or ISO product standard and may not included in this datasheet.

What is DIN 85?

DIN 85 is the German standard for slotted pan head machine screws with metric threads. Although officially withdrawn, it continues to be widely manufactured and used.

What is the difference between DIN 85 and DIN 7985?

The primary difference is the drive style:
DIN 85: Slotted drive
DIN 7985: Phillips or Pozidriv cross recess
Both feature a pan head profile.

Are DIN 85 screws fully threaded?

Yes. DIN 85 machine screws are manufactured with full metric threads.

What materials are commonly available?

Carbon steel, stainless steel A2 (304), stainless steel A4 (316), brass, and titanium Grades 2 and 5 are commonly available.

Can DIN 85 screws be used outdoors?

Yes. For outdoor or corrosive environments, stainless steel A4 (316) or titanium is recommended.

What screwdriver is required?

A standard flat-blade (slotted) screwdriver matching the slot width should be used.

Are these screws available with fine threads?

The standard specifies metric coarse threads. Fine-thread versions may be available as special manufacture.
